USS Parker (DD-48)
USS Parker (DD-48) was a United States Navy Aylwin-class destroyer commissioned in 1913 and served during World War I.
Parker was built by William Cramp & Sons, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was launched on March 8, 1913, and commissioned on December 8, 1913.
During World War I, Parker served primarily in the Atlantic, escorting convoys and performing anti-submarine patrols. She operated extensively off the U.S. East Coast and in European waters. Parker was involved in several engagements with German U-boats, although she is not credited with any confirmed sinkings.
Following the war, Parker continued to serve with the U.S. Navy until she was decommissioned on March 20, 1922. She was subsequently sold for scrap in 1935 in accordance with the London Naval Treaty.
The Aylwin-class destroyers, of which Parker was a member, represented an early generation of U.S. Navy destroyers, characterized by their relatively small size and light armament. They played a significant role in the Navy's expansion and modernization efforts in the years leading up to and during World War I. Parker's service reflects the evolving role of destroyers in naval warfare, particularly in convoy escort and anti-submarine duties.
