Walker's career spanned several decades, during which he explored themes ranging from abstraction to portraiture to social commentary. He was influenced by modern art movements and incorporated elements of collage, painting, and drawing into his photographic work.

A significant portion of Walker's artistic output involved the manipulation and layering of images, often incorporating multiple exposures, solarization, and other darkroom techniques to create complex and visually striking compositions. He frequently used halftone screens to create tonal variations and patterns within his prints.
