Seth Low (fireboat)
The Seth Low was a fireboat operated by the Fire Department of New York City (FDNY) from 1929 to 1961. Named after Seth Low, a former Mayor of New York City and President of Columbia University, it was one of the most powerful and advanced fireboats of its time. The Seth Low was built by Ira S. Bushey and Sons of Brooklyn, New York.
Serving primarily in the New York Harbor, the Seth Low played a crucial role in fighting fires along the waterfront and aboard ships. It was equipped with powerful pumps and numerous monitors (water cannons), capable of delivering large volumes of water to suppress blazes quickly and effectively. Its capabilities were essential for protecting the city's valuable port infrastructure.
The Seth Low, along with other FDNY fireboats, responded to numerous major fires throughout its service life, including those at oil terminals, piers, and aboard vessels. It was a visible and reassuring presence on the harbor, a testament to the city's commitment to maritime safety.
After its retirement from active service in 1961, the Seth Low was eventually sold. Its ultimate fate is less well documented, but it no longer serves in the FDNY fleet. It remains a significant historical vessel in the history of New York City firefighting.
