Zev Segal
Zev Segal (born 1947) is an Israeli-Canadian mathematician specializing in category theory and homotopy theory.
Segal received his Ph.D. from the University of Oxford in 1968 under the supervision of Michael Atiyah. He held positions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) before becoming a professor at the University of Oxford. Subsequently, he moved to Canada and held a professorship at the University of Western Ontario.
Segal's research has made significant contributions to the development of equivariant stable homotopy theory and its connections to representation theory. He is particularly known for his work on Segal's Burnside ring conjecture and the Segal conjecture concerning the classifying space of compact Lie groups. His work has influenced numerous mathematicians and continues to be an active area of research. He is also known for his work on Gamma spaces and their role in algebraic K-theory.
His publications include influential papers in journals such as Topology, Inventiones Mathematicae, and Annals of Mathematics.
