Novelda

Novelda is a town and municipality located in the province of Alicante, in the Valencian Community, Spain. It is situated in the Vinalopó Mitjà comarca.

Geography and Demographics

Novelda lies inland, at the foot of the Serra de la Mola mountain range. The town has a Mediterranean climate characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. As of 2023, the estimated population of Novelda is around 25,000 inhabitants.

Economy

Novelda's economy is traditionally based on agriculture, particularly the cultivation of grapes, almonds, and olives. The town is also known for its marble industry, with numerous quarries and processing plants located in the surrounding area. The production of spices, particularly saffron, is another significant economic activity. Tourism plays an increasing role in the local economy, driven by the town's historical and architectural attractions.

History

The area around Novelda has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Evidence of Roman and Moorish presence can also be found. Following the Reconquista, Novelda came under Christian rule. It officially gained town status in the 17th century.

Culture and Landmarks

Novelda is known for its modernist architecture, particularly the Santuario de Santa María Magdalena, a unique church designed by a disciple of Antoni Gaudí. Other notable landmarks include the Castillo de la Mola (Mola Castle), a medieval fortress with a triangular tower, and the Casa-Museo Modernista (Modernist House-Museum). The town also celebrates several annual festivals, including the Fiestas Patronales in July, honoring the local patron saint.
