The Westerner (TV series)
The Westerner was an American Western television series that aired on NBC from September 30, 1960, to April 7, 1961. It starred Brian Keith as Dave Blassingame, a wandering cowboy with a philosophy of non-violence but more than capable with his Buntline Special when provoked.
The series was created by Sam Peckinpah, who also directed several episodes and served as a producer. Peckinpah aimed for a more realistic and nuanced portrayal of the West than was typical for television at the time. While the series featured action and adventure, it also explored themes of morality, social injustice, and the complexities of human relationships.
Dave Blassingame, the central character, carried a Buntline Special revolver and traveled with his dog, Brown, often finding himself embroiled in conflicts he tried to avoid. The show distinguished itself through its character development and its often bleak and gritty depiction of frontier life.
Despite critical acclaim and Peckinpah's distinctive style, The Westerner was cancelled after only one season due to low ratings. However, it has since gained a cult following and is recognized for its influence on subsequent Western television and film.
