Municipal Stadium (Kansas City, Missouri)
Municipal Stadium, also known as Blues Stadium and later as Royals Stadium, was a multi-purpose stadium located in Kansas City, Missouri. It served as the home of the Kansas City Blues (minor league baseball), the Kansas City Athletics (Major League Baseball), the Kansas City Chiefs (American Football League/National Football League), and the Kansas City Royals (Major League Baseball).
Originally built in 1923 as Muehlebach Field, the stadium was primarily a baseball venue. It was extensively renovated and expanded in the mid-1950s to accommodate the Athletics after their relocation from Philadelphia. Further modifications were made in the 1960s to accommodate the Chiefs.
The stadium’s configuration was notably asymmetrical due to the constraints of the surrounding urban environment. The close proximity of the right-field fence in particular gained notoriety.
Municipal Stadium hosted numerous significant events, including Major League Baseball games (including the 1960 All-Star Game), American Football League championship games, and early NFL seasons for the Chiefs.
The Kansas City Royals moved to Royals Stadium (now Kauffman Stadium) in 1973, and the stadium was demolished in 1976. A housing project now occupies the site.
