The Stars (band)
The Stars are a Canadian indie pop/rock band formed in Montreal, Quebec, in 2000. The band is known for their poetic lyrics, dual male/female vocals, and orchestral arrangements often incorporating strings and horns.
History:
The band was formed by vocalist and guitarist Torquil Campbell and keyboardist Chris Seligman. They recruited bassist Evan Cranley and vocalist/guitarist Amy Millan shortly thereafter. Their debut album, Nightsongs, was released in 2001 and established their signature sound. They gained wider recognition with their second album, Heart, released in 2003.
Musical Style and Influences:
Stars are often compared to bands such as The Smiths, Belle & Sebastian, and Pulp. Their music blends elements of indie rock, dream pop, and chamber pop. Their lyrics frequently explore themes of love, loss, and urban life. Campbell and Millan's alternating and harmonizing vocals are a key element of their sound.
