Hippomane

Hippomane, in classical literature and folklore, refers to two distinct concepts:

  1. A secretion of a mare in heat: This is the more common understanding of hippomane. It is described as a viscous, dark fluid, believed to be produced by a mare during estrus (heat). Ancient authors attributed magical or poisonous properties to this substance. It was thought to have the power to drive individuals mad with lust, or conversely, to act as a love potion. The precise nature of this secretion has been debated; some speculate it might relate to hormonal changes or uterine fluids associated with the estrous cycle.

  2. A plant: The term "hippomane" was also applied to certain poisonous plants. The most well-known of these is Hippomane mancinella, commonly called the manchineel tree. This tree, native to coastal areas of the Americas and the Caribbean, produces a milky sap that is intensely irritating to the skin and eyes. Contact with the sap can cause severe burns and blistering. Ingestion of the fruit can be fatal. The association between the plant and the mare's secretion likely stems from the shared belief in their inherent danger and toxicity.
