Deracoxib

Deracoxib is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the coxib class. It is used in veterinary medicine, specifically for the control of pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis and post-operative pain in dogs.

Deracoxib selectively inhibits cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), an enzyme responsible for the production of prostaglandins that mediate inflammation, pain, and fever. By inhibiting COX-2, deracoxib reduces the production of these prostaglandins, thereby alleviating pain and inflammation. Compared to non-selective NSAIDs, coxibs like deracoxib are generally considered to have a lower risk of gastrointestinal side effects, although they are not entirely without risk.

Deracoxib is typically administered orally. Dosage is prescribed by a veterinarian, taking into account the dog's weight and condition. As with all NSAIDs, potential side effects should be monitored, and use should be under the guidance of a veterinarian. Common side effects can include vomiting, decreased appetite, and lethargy. More serious side effects, though less common, can involve gastrointestinal ulceration, liver damage, and kidney damage.
