Holden (band)

Holden was a French pop/rock band formed in Paris in 1998. They were known for their melancholic melodies, literary lyrics, and sophisticated arrangements, often incorporating elements of jazz and orchestral music.

History:

The band was founded by singer, songwriter, and keyboardist Armelle Pioline. The initial lineup consisted of Pioline, Pierre-Jean Cras, and Eric Pifeteau. The name "Holden" was inspired by J.D. Salinger's character Holden Caulfield from The Catcher in the Rye.

Holden released their debut album, L'arrière-monde, in 1998. They gained significant recognition with their second album, Automation, released in 2002, which featured a more polished and ambitious sound. The album received critical acclaim and helped establish them as a prominent act in the French music scene.

Their third album, Light in the Evening, came out in 2006 and showcased a broader range of influences. Following Light in the Evening, the band released Fantômas in 2009, an album influenced by the silent film series.

Musical Style and Influences:

Holden's music is characterized by its atmospheric and introspective nature. Pioline's vocals, often described as delicate and haunting, are a central element of their sound. Their lyrics frequently explore themes of love, loss, and urban alienation.

Their musical influences range from classic French chanson to contemporary indie rock. Critics have noted similarities to bands such as Radiohead, Portishead, and Air.
