Platypus (band)

Platypus was a progressive rock band formed in 1999, composed of former members of Dream Theater, Dixie Dregs, and King's X. The band was conceived by bassist/vocalist John Myung (Dream Theater) and keyboardist Derek Sherinian (ex-Dream Theater), who sought to explore musical avenues outside of their established bands. They recruited guitarist Ty Tabor (King's X) and drummer Rod Morgenstein (Dixie Dregs, Winger).

Platypus released two studio albums: When Pus Comes to Shove (1999) and Pyrotechnics (2000). Their music was characterized by complex instrumental arrangements, blending elements of progressive rock, jazz fusion, and hard rock. Sherinian's prominent keyboard work, Tabor's distinctive guitar tone, Myung's intricate basslines, and Morgenstein's dynamic drumming created a unique sound within the progressive rock landscape.

Despite critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase, Platypus disbanded after their second album due to the members' commitments to their other projects. The band is remembered for its short but impactful contribution to the progressive rock genre and is considered a notable example of a successful supergroup collaboration. Its members went on to pursue various individual and collaborative projects within the music industry.
