Oroluk
Oroluk is an uninhabited atoll in the Federated States of Micronesia. It is geographically part of the Caroline Islands.
Geography: Oroluk Atoll consists of a single, relatively large, thickly wooded island surrounded by a fringing reef. The lagoon is relatively deep and accessible by small boats. The island is low-lying and subject to potential flooding during storm surges.
Administration: Administratively, Oroluk is part of the state of Pohnpei, one of the four states that comprise the Federated States of Micronesia.
History: Oroluk was likely known to the indigenous population for centuries prior to European contact. Detailed historical records pertaining specifically to Oroluk are sparse, but it shares a similar history to other islands in the region, having been under Spanish, German, and Japanese control before becoming part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands administered by the United States. The island became part of the Federated States of Micronesia upon its independence.
Environment: Oroluk possesses a fragile island ecosystem, vulnerable to climate change impacts such as sea-level rise and increased storm frequency. Its isolation has contributed to a unique biodiversity which requires conservation efforts.
