Jane Williams (missionary)

Jane Williams (1803 – 1896) was a British missionary associated with the Church Missionary Society (CMS). She is primarily known for her significant contributions to missionary work in New Zealand, alongside her husband, the Reverend Henry Williams.

Jane Williams accompanied her husband to the Bay of Islands, New Zealand, in 1823. Her role extended beyond that of a supportive wife; she actively participated in the mission's activities. She was instrumental in establishing and running schools for Māori girls, teaching them reading, writing, sewing, and other practical skills. Her efforts aimed to provide these young women with education and opportunities that were otherwise unavailable to them.

In addition to her educational work, Jane Williams played a vital role in supporting her husband's translation of the Bible into the Māori language. She assisted with proofreading and editing the translated texts, contributing to the wider effort of making the scriptures accessible to the Māori population.

Throughout her decades of service in New Zealand, Jane Williams demonstrated resilience and commitment to her missionary calling. She adapted to life in a new and often challenging environment, learning the Māori language and culture. Her contributions to education and religious instruction left a lasting impact on the Māori community and helped to shape the landscape of missionary work in the region.

Following her husband's death in 1867, Jane Williams remained in New Zealand until she returned to England in 1887. She passed away in England in 1896, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated service and contributions to the advancement of education and Christianity in New Zealand.
