Ana Roje
Ana Roje (born November 2, 1909, in Zagreb, Austria-Hungary, died December 15, 1991, in Zagreb, Croatia, Yugoslavia) was a prominent Croatian ballet dancer, choreographer, and ballet pedagogue. She is considered one of the most important figures in the development of Croatian ballet.
Roje received her initial ballet training in Zagreb before continuing her studies abroad, including in Vienna and Berlin. She performed with several European ballet companies before returning to Zagreb to become a principal dancer and choreographer with the Croatian National Theatre.
Her career spanned several decades, during which she significantly contributed to the development of Croatian ballet. She choreographed numerous ballets, often drawing inspiration from Croatian folklore and literature. Her notable works include choreography for "Gingerbread Heart" (Licitar), a ballet based on Croatian folk motifs, and contributions to the development of ballet curriculum and training methods in Croatia.
Beyond her performances and choreography, Roje was a dedicated ballet pedagogue, mentoring generations of Croatian dancers. Her teaching legacy continues to influence ballet education in Croatia. She received numerous awards and recognitions for her contributions to the art of ballet in Croatia and Yugoslavia.
