Kordshuli (tribe)

The Kordshuli are a subgroup of the Svans, an ethnic subgroup of Georgians, inhabiting the Upper Svaneti region of Georgia. They are distinguished by their unique dialect of the Svan language, which is one of the Kartvelian languages. Historically, the Kordshuli resided in the western parts of Upper Svaneti, primarily in the Mestia Municipality. Their culture, like that of other Svan groups, is characterized by strong traditions, including distinctive polyphonic singing, elaborate dances, and a deep connection to their ancestral lands. They are known for their historical defense against invaders, utilizing the mountainous terrain and fortified towers that are characteristic of the Svaneti landscape. The Kordshuli, like other Svans, primarily practice Orthodox Christianity. Their traditional lifestyle was heavily dependent on agriculture and animal husbandry, although tourism has become increasingly important to the local economy in recent decades.
