Tamás Erdélyi (mathematician)

Tamás Erdélyi is a Hungarian-American mathematician specializing in approximation theory, analysis, and number theory. He is known for his work on polynomials with constrained coefficients, including Littlewood polynomials and Newman polynomials, and for his contributions to the study of the distribution of zeros of polynomials.

Erdélyi received his Ph.D. from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He has held positions at various universities, including Texas A&M University, where he is currently a professor of mathematics.

His research interests include:

  • Approximation theory: Study of how functions can be approximated by simpler functions, such as polynomials.
  • Analysis: A broad field encompassing real analysis, complex analysis, and functional analysis.
  • Number theory: The branch of mathematics concerned with the properties of integers.
  • Polynomials with constrained coefficients: Studying polynomials where the coefficients are restricted to a specific set of values, such as {-1, 0, 1}.
  • Littlewood and Newman Polynomials: These are specific types of polynomials with coefficients restricted to {-1, 1} and {0, 1}, respectively, which have been studied extensively due to their connections to various areas of mathematics, including signal processing and cryptography.

Erdélyi has published numerous research articles in leading mathematical journals. He has also co-authored books on polynomials and related topics.
