North Island (Houtman Abrolhos)

North Island is the northernmost island in the Wallabi Group, which forms part of the Houtman Abrolhos island chain located off the coast of Western Australia. It lies approximately 60 kilometers west of Geraldton. The island is a low-lying coral cay, characterized by sandy beaches, sparse vegetation, and fringing coral reefs.

Historically significant as the site of early European shipwrecks and exploration, North Island served as a base for guano mining operations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Remnants of these mining activities, including old railway tracks and building foundations, can still be found on the island.

Today, North Island is primarily used for recreational fishing and tourism. Strict regulations are in place to protect the delicate marine environment and prevent damage to historical sites. The surrounding waters are renowned for their diverse marine life, including coral gardens, seabirds, and a variety of fish species.
