HOME (Manchester)

HOME is a combined cinema, theatre, and art gallery complex in Manchester, England. It opened in 2015, replacing Cornerhouse and the Library Theatre Company as their permanent base. HOME serves as a major cultural hub for the city, offering a diverse programme of film screenings, theatrical productions, visual art exhibitions, and community engagement initiatives.

History: The project to create HOME was born from the merger of two established Manchester arts organisations: Cornerhouse, a cinema and arts centre, and the Library Theatre Company, a producing theatre company formerly based in Manchester Central Library. Recognizing the potential synergies and the need for updated facilities, a joint project was conceived to create a larger, more versatile arts venue. Construction began in 2013, and HOME officially opened its doors in May 2015.

Facilities: HOME houses five cinema screens, two theatre spaces, a gallery space for contemporary visual art, a bookshop, and a restaurant and bar. The building's architecture is modern and distinctive, contributing to the regeneration of the First Street area of Manchester.

Programming: HOME's programming is diverse and caters to a wide range of audiences. Film programming includes independent, arthouse, and world cinema, alongside mainstream releases. The theatre spaces host both touring productions and original works produced by HOME. The visual art gallery showcases contemporary art from both emerging and established artists. In addition to its core programming, HOME also offers a range of learning and participation activities, including workshops, courses, and events for families and young people.

Mission: HOME aims to be a welcoming and inclusive space that celebrates creativity, challenges perspectives, and enriches the cultural life of Manchester and beyond. It seeks to engage diverse communities and provide opportunities for artistic expression and cultural exchange.

Location: HOME is located on First Street in Manchester city centre. It is easily accessible by public transport and is situated in a developing area with other cultural and leisure facilities.
