The Shapes (British band)

The Shapes were a British punk/new wave band formed in Redditch, Worcestershire, England, in 1978. Known for their angular, energetic sound and often surreal or satirical lyrics, they were part of the late 1970s and early 1980s UK independent music scene.

The band's core lineup consisted of Ed Borrie (vocals), Phil Jacobs (guitar), Tony Ford (bass), and John Hamilton (drums). Their music drew influences from punk rock, new wave, and art rock, creating a distinctive sound characterized by sharp guitar riffs, a driving rhythm section, and Borrie's distinctive vocals and lyrical delivery.

The Shapes released several singles and EPs on independent labels, including "Batman in the Launderette," which gained significant attention and airplay. Other notable releases include "Wot's For Lunch Mum (Not Borage Again)" and "Revolving Clock." Their music often explored themes of suburban life, consumerism, and social commentary with a quirky and often humorous approach.

Despite not achieving mainstream commercial success, The Shapes built a dedicated following and toured extensively throughout the UK. They were known for their energetic live performances, often incorporating theatrical elements and visual gags into their shows.

The band eventually disbanded in the mid-1980s. However, their music has been re-evaluated and rediscovered in recent years, with retrospective compilations and reissues bringing their work to a new audience. They are now regarded as an important and influential band within the UK post-punk scene.
