1937–38 National Basketball League (United States) season
The 1937–38 National Basketball League (NBL) season was the inaugural season of the NBL, a professional basketball league in the United States that would later become the National Basketball Association (NBA). Thirteen teams competed in two divisions: the Eastern Division and the Western Division.
The Akron Firestone Non-Skids won the inaugural NBL Championship, defeating the Oshkosh All-Stars in the championship series.
Notable teams participating in the first season included the Akron Firestone Non-Skids, Akron Goodyear Wingfoots, Chicago American Gears, Hammond Ciesar All-Americans, Indianapolis Kautskys, Oshkosh All-Stars, and Whiting Ciesar All-Americans. The league was largely composed of industrial league teams, representing companies like Firestone and Goodyear.
The NBL aimed to provide a higher level of professional basketball than was previously available, attracting talented players and establishing more structured league play. The season marked an important step in the development of professional basketball in the United States.
