Geopyxis

Geopyxis is a genus of fungi in the family Pyronemataceae, within the order Pezizales. These fungi are commonly known as Earpicks or Elf Cups due to their distinctive cup-shaped or ear-shaped fruiting bodies (apothecia).

Geopyxis species are typically small, often only a few centimeters across. The apothecia are generally orange, reddish-brown, or yellowish in color and can be either sessile (attached directly to the substrate) or have a short stipe (stalk). The inner surface (hymenium) of the cup is where the spores are produced.

These fungi are saprophytic, meaning they obtain nutrients from decaying organic matter. They are often found growing on soil, decaying wood, or leaf litter in forests and woodlands. They can be found in various regions around the world.

Microscopically, Geopyxis species are characterized by their asci (sac-like structures containing spores) and ascospores (the spores themselves). The ascospores are usually hyaline (translucent), elliptical or fusiform (spindle-shaped), and smooth.

While some species may be considered edible, they are typically small and lacking in substantial flavor, and therefore not commonly collected for consumption. Positive identification is critical before consuming any wild mushroom due to the potential for misidentification and possible toxicity.
