Werner Roth (footballer)

Werner Roth (born 4 March 1948) is a former professional soccer player who played primarily as a defender and midfielder. He is best known for his career with the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League (NASL) in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Born in Yugoslavia (now part of present-day Serbia), Roth immigrated to the United States at a young age. He attended Brooklyn Technical High School and played college soccer at Long Island University.

Roth began his professional career with the New York Cosmos in 1972, becoming a key player during the team's rise to prominence. He was known for his skillful play, versatility, and leadership on the field. He captained the Cosmos for several years and was a member of their championship-winning teams in 1972, 1977, 1978, and 1980. He played alongside international stars such as Pelé, Franz Beckenbauer, and Giorgio Chinaglia.

Roth also represented the United States national team, earning three caps between 1972 and 1973.

After retiring from professional soccer, Roth remained involved in the sport as a coach and commentator. He has also been involved in youth soccer development. He was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 1989.
