French frigate Sibylle (1777)
The Sibylle was a 32-gun Charmante-class frigate of the French Navy, launched in 1777. She was designed by Léon Guignace and was known for her speed and maneuverability.
Service History
Sibylle saw action in the American Revolutionary War, participating in several engagements against the British. Notably, she fought in the Battle of Ushant in 1778. She also operated in the Caribbean, intercepting British merchant vessels and providing support to American forces.
In 1783, under the command of Commander de Kergariou-Locmaria, she took part in the Expédition de la baie d'Hudson under the command of La Pérouse, during which she helped capture Fort Prince of Wales and York Factory.
During the French Revolutionary Wars, Sibylle continued to serve actively. In 1793, she was captured by the British frigate HMS Romney off the coast of Sardinia.
Fate
Following her capture, the British commissioned her into the Royal Navy as HMS Sibylle. She served for a number of years under the British flag before being broken up in 1798.
