Helmert (crater)
Helmert is a lunar impact crater that lies on the far side of the Moon, well beyond the reach of direct visibility from Earth. It is located to the southeast of the larger crater Strömgren, and northwest of the immense walled plain Hertzsprung.
This crater is a heavily eroded formation with a rounded and somewhat irregular outer rim. Several smaller craters lie along the rim edge and within the interior. The most notable of these is a small crater intruding slightly into the eastern side. The interior floor is marked by a few small craterlets and is relatively level. Due to its location and age, Helmert has been subjected to numerous impacts over time, resulting in its worn appearance.
Helmert is named after Friedrich Robert Helmert, a German geodesist and mathematician.
