Vrtojba
Vrtojba is a village in the Municipality of Šempeter-Vrtojba in the Gorizia region of western Slovenia. It is situated immediately adjacent to the Italian border, sharing a conurbation with the Italian town of Gorizia. Historically, Vrtojba was part of the Austrian Littoral.
Vrtojba is known for its strategic location and has a history intertwined with border disputes and geopolitical shifts. After World War II, it was part of Yugoslavia until Slovenia's independence in 1991. The proximity to Italy has made it a significant commercial and residential area.
The village is primarily agricultural, but also benefits from cross-border commerce and tourism. The population is predominantly Slovene, with a notable Italian-speaking minority. Vrtojba shares a common administrative and economic area with Šempeter pri Gorici, forming the Municipality of Šempeter-Vrtojba.
