Diego (footballer, born 1979)
Diego Ribas da Cunha, known simply as Diego, is a Brazilian former professional footballer who played as an attacking midfielder.
Born on February 28, 1979, in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, Brazil, Diego had a distinguished career spanning numerous top European clubs and the Brazilian national team. He was known for his technique, dribbling skills, vision, and free-kick ability.
Diego began his professional career at Santos FC in Brazil, where he formed a prolific partnership with Robinho. Their success at Santos led to Diego securing a transfer to Porto in Portugal. He subsequently played for Werder Bremen in Germany, where he enjoyed considerable success and became a Bundesliga star.
Following his time in Germany, Diego moved to Juventus in Italy and later to Atlético Madrid in Spain. He had two spells with Atlético Madrid, winning the La Liga title in 2013-14.
Diego also played for VfL Wolfsburg in Germany before returning to Brazil to play for Flamengo. He finished his career with Flamengo, winning the Copa Libertadores in 2019 and the Brazilian Serie A title in 2019 and 2020.
Diego represented Brazil at various youth levels and made his debut for the senior national team in 2003. He participated in the 2004 Copa America and the 2008 Olympic Games, where he won a bronze medal.
