Zingar

Zingar, also spelled as "Tzigan" or "Zigan", is a term historically used in several European languages to refer to the Romani people. It is often considered a pejorative and discriminatory term due to its association with negative stereotypes and historical persecution of the Romani community.

The term’s etymology is complex and debated, but it is believed to have originated from a medieval Greek word, athinganoi (Αθίγγανοι), initially used to describe a heretical sect in Asia Minor. The connection between this sect and the Romani people is unclear, but the term, in its various forms, became widely adopted across Europe as a general designation for nomadic groups, eventually focusing specifically on the Romani.

Throughout history, "Zingar" and its variations have been used in legal documents, literature, and everyday speech to identify Romani people. However, the term often carried connotations of criminality, untrustworthiness, and social marginalization. The use of this term has significantly contributed to the perpetuation of negative stereotypes and prejudice against the Romani community.

Today, the term is widely considered offensive and inappropriate. The Romani community generally prefers to be referred to as Romani (singular: Rom), Rom people, or by their specific tribal affiliations. The use of "Zingar" is strongly discouraged in favor of more respectful and accurate terminology. Many Romani organizations and advocacy groups actively campaign against the use of this term and promote the use of more appropriate and respectful language.
