Abiezrite
The term "Abiezrite" (Hebrew: אביעזרי, "My father is help") refers to a member of the clan or family descended from Abiezer, also known as Jeezer. Abiezer was a son of Gilead and grandson of Manasseh, making the Abiezrites part of the tribe of Manasseh.
The Abiezrites are primarily mentioned in the Book of Judges, specifically in relation to Gideon. Gideon, the judge who delivered Israel from the Midianites, was himself an Abiezrite, hailing from the town of Ophrah. His call to leadership involved a direct command to tear down the altar of Baal that belonged to his father, Joash the Abiezrite. This act instigated conflict within the clan, with some members initially demanding Gideon's death.
Therefore, the Abiezrites are significant due to their connection to Gideon and the role they played in the early history of Israel as described in the biblical texts. The geographical location associated with the Abiezrites is typically the region within the tribal allotment of Manasseh, near Ophrah.
