The King (Anjimile album)
The King is the second studio album by Malawian-American singer-songwriter Anjimile Chigumula, known professionally as Anjimile. It was released on September 8, 2023, via 4AD.
The album explores themes of identity, self-acceptance, and spiritual growth, particularly in relation to Anjimile's journey as a Black trans person. It represents a shift from the largely acoustic sound of his debut album, Giver Taker, incorporating electronic elements and more expansive production. Anjimile has described the album as a more confident and self-assured statement, reflecting a deeper understanding of himself and his artistry.
Prior to the album's release, several singles were shared, including "The Right to Exist," "Father," and "Mother." These tracks offered a glimpse into the album's sonic landscape and thematic concerns. The King received generally positive reviews from music critics, who praised its emotional depth, sonic experimentation, and Anjimile's vocal performance.
