Narrabeen (1886 ferry)
The Narrabeen was a double-ended, screw-driven ferry that operated on Sydney Harbour, Australia, from 1886. Built by Mort's Dock & Engineering Co. in Balmain, Sydney, it was commissioned by the Port Jackson Steamship Company.
Primarily designed for the Manly service, the Narrabeen was one of the larger ferries of its time and was notable for its size and capacity. It transported passengers between Circular Quay and Manly, helping to facilitate the growing popularity of Manly as a seaside resort.
The Narrabeen remained in service for several decades. Over the course of its operational life, it underwent various modifications and repairs. As larger and more modern ferries were introduced, the Narrabeen was eventually relegated to less frequent routes and then withdrawn from service.
Specific details regarding the exact date and circumstances of its decommissioning and subsequent fate are not readily available in all historical records, but it is understood the vessel was eventually retired and likely broken up. The Narrabeen, however, represents an important part of the history of transportation on Sydney Harbour and the development of the Manly ferry service.
