Koritnice

Koritnice is a Slovenian word that refers to the dried, hollowed-out trunks of deciduous trees, traditionally used as bee hives. Specifically, these are created by removing the heartwood of a standing tree, typically a large, old tree such as a linden, oak, or maple, leaving a hollow cylinder which is then capped and equipped with an entrance for the bees.

These traditional hives are an integral part of Slovenian beekeeping history and culture. The process of creating koritnice is a labor-intensive craft passed down through generations. The resulting hives offer natural insulation and a microclimate that can be beneficial for bee health and honey production. They are also aesthetically valued and often seen as a symbol of traditional rural life in Slovenia.

The use of koritnice highlights a close relationship between humans and nature, employing natural resources sustainably. Although less common today due to the availability of modern hive designs, the practice of creating and using koritnice continues in some parts of Slovenia, both as a means of beekeeping and as a way to preserve cultural heritage. They are increasingly recognized as a valuable part of intangible cultural heritage.
