5th Motorized Division (France)

The 5th Motorized Division (5e Division Motorisée, 5e DM) was a French motorized infantry division that existed during the interwar period and the early stages of World War II. Formed in 1939 as part of the modernization effort of the French Army, its purpose was to provide a mobile element within larger formations. The division consisted primarily of motorized infantry, supported by artillery and reconnaissance units, all equipped with vehicles to facilitate rapid deployment and maneuver.

The 5e DM participated in the Battle of France in May and June 1940. It was deployed in the northern sector and saw action against the invading German forces. Like many French units, it suffered heavy losses during the rapid German advance and the ensuing collapse of the French front. The division was ultimately dissolved following the armistice between France and Germany. The precise details of its deployment and combat history during the Battle of France can be found in archival records and historical accounts of the campaign.
