Selinene

Selinene is a naturally occurring isomeric sesquiterpene. More specifically, it refers to a pair of cyclic hydrocarbons, α-selinene and β-selinene, both possessing the same molecular formula (C₁₅H₂₄) but differing in the position of a double bond within their structure. They are bicyclic compounds featuring a decalin skeleton, a fused pair of cyclohexane rings.

Selinene isomers are found in a wide variety of plants, including celery (from which the name is derived), hops, and various species of Eucalyptus. They contribute to the aroma and flavor profiles of these plants.

α-Selinene and β-Selinene are often isolated together and are separated through fractional distillation or other separation techniques. Their specific properties, such as boiling point and refractive index, differ slightly.

These compounds are used in the fragrance and flavor industries, and are also being investigated for potential biological activity, including anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.
