Congress of Visegrád (1339)

The Congress of Visegrád in 1339 was a significant diplomatic meeting held in Visegrád, Hungary, involving King Charles I of Hungary, King Casimir III of Poland, and King John of Bohemia. Its primary purpose was to establish a succession agreement between Hungary and Poland.

At the time, Casimir III of Poland lacked a male heir. The agreement stipulated that if Casimir III were to die without a male heir, the Polish throne would pass to Charles I's son, Louis (later Louis I of Hungary, also known as Louis the Great). This aimed to ensure continuity and stability in the region, preventing potential conflicts over the Polish succession.

The congress also addressed broader issues of cooperation and alliance between the three kingdoms, fostering closer political and economic ties. It signified a period of relative peace and collaboration in Central Europe, demonstrating the power of diplomacy in resolving succession concerns and promoting regional stability. The agreement ultimately paved the way for a personal union between Hungary and Poland under Louis I following Casimir's death in 1370.
