The Drinker (novel)

The Drinker is a novel by Polish writer Jerzy Pilch, originally published in 2004 under the Polish title Pod Mocnym Aniołem. The English translation by Bill Johnston was published in 2014. The novel centers on an alcoholic writer, nicknamed "The Drinker" or "Angel Stronghold," who repeatedly attempts to abstain from drinking but invariably relapses.

The narrative follows the protagonist's experiences in various detox clinics and his struggles with alcoholism, exploring themes of addiction, faith, love, and Polish identity. The story is told in a non-linear fashion, interweaving present-day struggles with memories and philosophical reflections. The protagonist often grapples with his past relationships and the consequences of his drinking on his life and those around him.

Pilch's writing style is characterized by its dark humor, irony, and a blend of the sacred and the profane. The novel is known for its vivid descriptions of the protagonist's alcoholic experiences and its unflinching portrayal of addiction. It is considered one of Pilch's most significant works.

The novel was adapted into a 2014 film, The Mighty Angel, directed by Wojciech Smarzowski.
