Guryev

Guryev may refer to:

  • Atyrau (formerly Guryev): A city in Kazakhstan, located at the mouth of the Ural River on the Caspian Sea. The city was known as Guryev from its founding in 1640 until 1991, when it was renamed Atyrau. The name "Guryev" originated from the merchant Gury Nazarov, who owned the trading post that initially developed into the city.

  • Guryev Oblast (historical): A former administrative division (oblast) of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic, and later independent Kazakhstan, centered on the city of Guryev. Following the renaming of the city to Atyrau, the oblast was also renamed Atyrau Oblast.

  • Guryev Porridge (Guriev Kasha): A rich Russian sweet porridge made with semolina, milk or cream, nuts, dried fruit, and spices. It is attributed, possibly apocryphally, to Count Dmitry Guryev, Minister of Finance under Tsar Alexander I, although the recipe is often credited to Zakhar Kuzmin, Guryev's serf cook.
