Neafrapus

Neafrapus is a genus of swifts in the family Apodidae. These birds are small to medium-sized swifts native to Africa. The genus currently contains two recognized species:

• Bates's Spinetail (Neafrapus batesi): Found primarily in equatorial Africa. It inhabits lowland rainforests and is characterized by its short, spiny tail and relatively large size compared to other African swifts.

• Boehm's Spinetail (Neafrapus boehmi): Distributed across eastern and southern Africa. This species prefers more open habitats, including woodland savanna and areas near water. Similar to Bates's Spinetail, it possesses a short, spiny tail, though it is generally smaller.

Both species are aerial insectivores, feeding on insects caught on the wing. They are typically observed in small groups or pairs. The "spinetail" name refers to the stiff, projecting feather shafts on the tail, which aid in support while roosting and climbing within tree cavities. Their nesting habits are poorly known, but they are believed to nest in tree hollows or similar cavities.
