In the 1980s, Koch founded the Oxbow Group, an energy development holding company primarily involved in coal.
Beyond his business endeavors, Koch is a passionate art collector, with collections including Impressionist paintings, maritime art, and American Western art. He is also known for his extensive collection of historical memorabilia related to the American West.
Koch's involvement in sailing culminated in his leading the America3 team to victory in the 1992 America's Cup. His campaign was notable for its innovative use of technology and a talented crew. The victory was achieved using an all-American crew, and the team emphasized American technology.
