Werner Roth (soccer)

Werner Roth (born March 4, 1948) is a former professional soccer player who was a prominent figure in the North American Soccer League (NASL) during the 1970s. A naturalized American citizen originally from Yugoslavia (specifically, what is now modern-day Slovenia), Roth primarily played as a defender.

Roth is best known for his time with the New York Cosmos, where he was a teammate of soccer legends Pelé, Franz Beckenbauer, and Giorgio Chinaglia. He joined the Cosmos in 1972 and became a key player in their defense, contributing to their NASL Soccer Bowl victories in 1972, 1977, and 1978. Roth was known for his strong tackling, aerial ability, and leadership qualities. He served as the team captain for several years.

Before joining the Cosmos, Roth played college soccer at Long Island University, where he earned All-American honors.

Following his playing career, Roth remained involved in soccer as a coach and commentator. He also worked in youth soccer development, helping to promote the sport in the United States. He is considered an important figure in the growth of soccer in North America during the NASL era.
