Houten

Houten is a municipality located in the province of Utrecht in the Netherlands. Situated south of the city of Utrecht, it is known for its distinctive urban planning, particularly its bicycle-friendly infrastructure and its compartmentalized layout.

The town of Houten itself dates back to Roman times, though it remained a small village for centuries. Significant growth occurred in the late 20th century, transforming Houten into a modern residential area.

Houten is divided into several "compartments" or "wijken" (neighborhoods), each designed to be self-sufficient with its own local shops, schools, and green spaces. Car traffic is largely restricted within these compartments, with cycle paths forming the primary mode of transportation within and between them. This design prioritizes the safety and comfort of cyclists and pedestrians.

Houten has two railway stations: Houten and Houten Castellum, both on the Utrecht–Breda railway line. These stations provide convenient access to Utrecht and other major cities.
