Gilbert Burns (farmer)

Gilbert Burns (1760 – 1827) was a Scottish farmer, younger brother of the poet Robert Burns, and the administrator of the Burns family estate at Mossgiel Farm after Robert's death. Born in Alloway, Ayrshire, Gilbert was instrumental in helping his brother with the farm work and also played a significant role in the publication of Robert's poems.

Gilbert Burns was known for his intelligence and practical skills. He provided financial support to Robert during periods of hardship and contributed significantly to the management of Mossgiel. Following Robert's relocation to Ellisland Farm and later Dumfries, Gilbert remained at Mossgiel, working the land and raising his family.

After Robert Burns's death in 1796, Gilbert was a trustee of his brother’s estate. He successfully navigated the complexities of managing the farm and ensuring the financial stability of Robert’s widow and children. In 1804, Gilbert moved to East Lothian where he became the factor (estate manager) of Lady Blantyre's estate at Lethington, later known as Lennoxlove House. He continued in this role until his death in 1827.

Gilbert Burns's own literary contributions are limited, but his significance lies in his support for his brother's work, his dedication to his family, and his competent management of agricultural estates. He is remembered as a hardworking and reliable figure within the Burns family circle.
