Amour (musical)
Amour is a French musical with music by Michel Legrand and book and lyrics by Didier van Cauwelaert, adapted into English by Jeremy Sams. It is based on the novella Le Passe-Muraille by Marcel Aymé.
The story centers on Dusoleil, a timid Parisian civil servant who discovers he has the ability to walk through walls. Initially, he uses his newfound power to pull pranks and gain minor advantages, but he soon begins using it to help others and eventually falls in love with Isabelle, a married woman trapped in an unhappy relationship. As Dusoleil grapples with the responsibilities and consequences of his abilities, the musical explores themes of love, freedom, conformity, and the transformative power of the extraordinary within the ordinary.
Amour premiered in France in 2002 and subsequently opened on Broadway in 2002, earning multiple Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical. While its Broadway run was brief, the musical has been produced in various other venues and languages, gaining a following for its whimsical story, Legrand's distinctive score, and its touching portrayal of human connection. The musical's score blends elements of traditional musical theatre with French chanson and jazz influences.
