Sakchi

Sakchi was the original name of the city now known as Jamshedpur, India. It was a village in the Singhbhum district of Bihar (now in Jharkhand) before the establishment of Tata Steel in 1907. Jamshedji Tata selected this location for his steel plant due to its proximity to iron ore, coal, manganese, and water resources. The village was renamed Jamshedpur in 1919 in honor of Jamshedji Tata, the founder of the Tata Group. While the formal name is Jamshedpur, the area around the Tatanagar railway station is still popularly referred to as Sakchi by many local residents. The Sakchi market continues to be a major commercial hub in Jamshedpur.
