Mick Leahy (explorer)

Mick Leahy (1901 – 7 March 1991) was an Australian explorer, prospector, and planter best known for his expeditions into the highlands of Papua New Guinea during the 1930s. With his brothers Paddy and Danny, he led the first extensive explorations into the previously unknown interior of the island, encountering large populations who had been isolated from the outside world.

Leahy was born in Toowoomba, Queensland. His early life involved cattle herding and prospecting in the Australian Outback. He initially went to Papua New Guinea in the late 1920s as a prospector, searching for gold.

Leahy's major expeditions occurred in the early 1930s. He and his brothers, often accompanied by other men, ventured into the central highlands. These expeditions were documented through film and photography, providing some of the earliest visual records of the highland peoples and their cultures. Leahy's films and photographs were later used in documentaries and educational materials, contributing to Western perceptions of Papua New Guinea.

His explorations led to the discovery of fertile valleys and significant populations. He and his team established plantations and businesses in the highlands. He also engaged in trade with the local populations, exchanging goods for labor and supplies.

Leahy's explorations are viewed from different perspectives. On one hand, he is regarded as a pioneer who opened up the interior of Papua New Guinea to the outside world. On the other hand, his actions had a profound impact on the lives of the indigenous people, disrupting their traditional ways of life and contributing to colonial influence.

Later in life, Leahy continued to live in Papua New Guinea. He wrote about his experiences in the book The Land That Time Forgot, co-authored with Maurice Fieldman. Mick Leahy died in Goroka, Papua New Guinea, in 1991. His explorations remain a significant part of the history of Papua New Guinea and its interaction with the Western world.
