Chewing Gum (novel)
Chewing Gum is a 2014 novel by British writer Michaela Coel, based on her award-winning play Chewing Gum Dreams. The novel explores themes of adolescence, faith, sexuality, and working-class life in London through the eyes of Tracey Gordon, a deeply religious 24-year-old virgin.
The story follows Tracey's attempts to lose her virginity and explore her sexuality, often in awkward and humorous ways, while navigating her conservative upbringing and strong religious beliefs. It delves into her relationships with her family, particularly her devout mother and rebellious sister, as well as her friendships and romantic interests. The novel is characterized by its frank and often explicit portrayal of sex and sexuality, as well as its witty and insightful observations on contemporary British culture. Chewing Gum served as the basis for the BAFTA-winning television series of the same name, also written by and starring Michaela Coel.
