DA! (band)

DA! was a German Neue Deutsche Welle (New German Wave) band formed in Düsseldorf in 1979. The band was initially composed of Peter Hein (vocals), Franz Bielmeier (guitar), and Chris Laubenthal (bass). They are considered one of the most important and influential bands of the NDW movement.

DA! was known for their energetic and often abrasive sound, characterized by Hein's distinctive, shouted vocals and a raw, minimalist musical approach. Their lyrics were often socially critical and satirical, addressing themes such as consumerism, alienation, and political apathy.

The band gained significant recognition with their debut single, "Messer," released in 1980, which became an underground hit. They followed this with their debut album, "DA!," in the same year, further solidifying their reputation as a leading force in the NDW scene. Their music was frequently featured on alternative radio stations and in independent music magazines.

DA! released several more albums throughout the early 1980s, including "Die deutsche sonne scheint" (1981) and "Hotel Hotel" (1982), continuing to explore their signature sound and lyrical themes.

The band eventually disbanded in the mid-1980s, with its members pursuing other musical projects. Peter Hein later became involved in academia. Despite their relatively short lifespan, DA! left a lasting impact on German music, influencing numerous artists and contributing significantly to the legacy of the Neue Deutsche Welle. Their music continues to be appreciated for its energy, originality, and critical perspective on German society.
