Odda (town)
Odda is a former municipality and a town in Ullensvang Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The town is located at the southern end of the Sørfjorden, in the traditional district of Hardanger. Prior to 2020, Odda was an independent municipality.
Historically, Odda was a small farming village. Its growth was spurred in the early 20th century by the establishment of hydroelectric power plants and associated industries, particularly carbide production. The industrial development attracted workers from across Norway and beyond, transforming Odda into a significant industrial center. The town was once known for its heavy industry, including the production of carbide, fertilizers, and other chemical products.
The landscape surrounding Odda is characterized by steep mountains, glaciers, and the fjord. Popular tourist attractions include the nearby Folgefonna glacier and the hike to Trolltunga (Troll's Tongue), a scenic rock formation overlooking Lake Ringedalsvatnet.
In 2020, Odda municipality was merged with Jondal and Ullensvang municipalities to form the new, larger Ullensvang Municipality. The town of Odda serves as one of the administrative centers for the new municipality. While the heavy industry that once dominated Odda's economy has declined, tourism and other sectors are playing an increasingly important role in the town's economy.
