John Watson (English artist)

John Watson (1685 - 1768) was an English portrait painter. He was born in Dublin, Ireland, but spent most of his career working in London. Watson trained under Sir Godfrey Kneller, a leading portraitist of the day, and adopted a style that closely resembled Kneller's.

Watson established a successful portrait practice, painting members of the aristocracy, gentry, and professional classes. He is known for the elegance and refinement of his portraits, often characterized by detailed depictions of clothing and accessories. His sitters included prominent figures such as physicians, clergymen, and politicians.

While Watson's work is not considered groundbreaking, it represents a competent and fashionable interpretation of the baroque portrait style prevalent in England during the first half of the 18th century. Examples of his work can be found in various public and private collections. He died in London in 1768.
