John Gilroy (artist)

John Gilroy (10 May 1898 – 17 April 1985) was a British artist and commercial poster designer, best known for his advertising work, particularly the Guinness advertisements featuring a zoo keeper and animals.

Born in London, Gilroy studied at the Royal College of Art. Initially working in portraiture and landscape painting, he transitioned to commercial art and found success with his distinctive style. He was employed by the advertising agency S.H. Benson from the 1920s until his retirement in the 1960s.

Gilroy's Guinness campaigns, launched in the 1930s, were highly influential and helped to establish Guinness as a popular and recognizable brand. His humorous and memorable imagery, often featuring animals such as sea lions, toucans, ostriches, and kangaroos interacting with a hapless zookeeper, became iconic. Catchphrases such as "My Goodness, My Guinness!" and "Guinness is Good For You" became widely known.

Beyond Guinness, Gilroy also designed advertising campaigns for other major brands, including Bovril, Macleans toothpaste, and Bird's Custard. His work is characterized by its bold colours, simple shapes, and witty characterisations. He is considered one of the most important and influential commercial artists of the 20th century.
